Notice: I will be taking my summer vacation over the 4th of July. Be aware there will be no boot camp classes or personal training starting Wednesday July 1st through Thursday July 9th. The normal schedule will resume July 10th. Have a wonderful and safe holiday.

Despite the fact I will be gone make sure to stay active with one of many free fitness options Hoboken has to offer. Try a free class Monday July 6th at 7pm at Pier A sponsored by the Sky Club. Take a free yoga class Tuesdays at 7:00 pm at Pier A put on by Devotion Yoga. Or get out for a run with a group like the Hoboken Elysianettes.

Notice: Do to the Party With Purpose 5k being held on July 14th (see side bar) I will be rescheduling the 7:00 pm class on Pier A due to the kids activities and large number of people expected on the Pier. Therefore there will be no 7:00 pm class on July 14th, instead I will be holding a fitness assessment and class on Monday July 13th. I will be at Pier A Monday at 6:30 pm to start with measurements and testing. At 7:00 pm we will complete any fitness testing and then run a class ending at 8:00 pm.

10 Diet And Nutrition Myths Debunked

    1. Sugar Causes Diabetes.

The most common nutrition myth is probably that sugar causes diabetes. If you have diabetes, you do need to watch your sugar and carbohydrate intake, with the help of your Registered Dietitian, to properly manage your blood sugar level. However, if you do not have diabetes, sugar intake will not cause you to develop the disease. The main risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are a diet high in calories, being overweight, and an inactive lifestyle.

    2. All Fats Are Bad.

It's a long-held nutrition myth that all fats are bad. But the fact is, we all need fat. Fats aid nutrient absorption and nerve transmission, and they help to maintain cell membrane integrity - to name just a few of their useful purposes. However, when consumed in excessive amounts, fats contribute to weight gain, heart disease and certain types of cancers.

Not all fats are created equal. Some fats can actually help promote good health, while others increase the risk for heart disease. The key is to replace bad fats (saturated fats and trans fats) with good fats (monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats).

    3. Brown Sugar Is Better Than White Sugar.

The brown sugar sold at grocery stores is actually white granulated sugar with added molasses. Yes, brown sugar contains minute amounts of minerals. But unless you eat a gigantic portion of brown sugar every day, the mineral content difference between brown sugar and white sugar is absolutely insignificant. The idea that brown and white sugar have big differences is another common nutrition myth.

    5 Nutrition Tips For Women

    1. Iron Women.

Iron Rich Foods Due to women's monthly cycles, pre-menopausal women simply need more iron. Iron-deficiency anemia is very common in young women. The recommended iron intake for pre-menopausal women is 18 mg, and the recommendation increases to 27 mg for pregnant women. The No. 1 nutrition tip for women is to regularly include iron-rich foods such as meat, shellfish, beans and enriched cereals in your diet.

    2. Bone Up On Calcium AND Vitamin D.

Calcium and Vitamin D Calcium not only builds and strengthens bones and teeth. It is also important in maintaining normal heart beat and regulating blood pressure. Some studies suggest that calcium supplements may help relieve premenstrual syndrome PMS. On the other hand, vitamin D nutrition plays an integral role in calcium metabolism. Studies showed that women with vitamin D insufficiency absorb less than 10 percent of available calcium. In other words, even if you have an adequate calcium intake, you may not absorb it effectively if you have low levels of vitamin D. For average adult women, the recommended intake for calcium and vitamin D is 1000 mg and 200 IU respectively.
